What supplies do you need for Macrame?

When you’re an absolute beginner, all you really need to start with Macrame are Macrame cords and knowledge of the basic knots. I created my first Macrame plant hanger by simply attaching a hoop to my door handle with duct tape, just saying :-).

But, when you want to get more serious about your Macrame projects, there are quite some helpful tools available that you might want to give a try.

From gorgeous vintage razor-sharp scissors to lightweight Macrame project boards and adjustable work stands, here are my 10 favorite essentials to build the perfect Macrame workstation.

#1 Craft Scissors

Because you’ll be doing a lot of cutting and trimming threads when working on your Macrame piece, I recommend investing in a good sharp pair of scissors.

I love the gorgeous vintage embroidery scissors by BIHRTC. These top-rated pointed edge craft scissors are known for their comfortable metal handle and sharp blades to help you cut cords more precisely.

When you prefer a bigger pair of scissors, you will love the Fiskars Amplify or LIVINGO Premium Tailor Scissors. These dressmaker scissors are designed for cutting through tough fabrics and are perfect for Macrame.

#2 Fringe Comb

When you’re looking for the best way to create a beautiful fringe for your Macrame piece, I recommend using a durable steel comb to unravel your threads. Another great option I’ve seen people use a lot for combing out their fringe is a special pet brush.

When you’re making feathers and you want your fringe to be more firm, I recommend using a Fabric Stiffener Spray.

#3 Rotary Cutter

Are you looking for a handy tool to help you cut your Macrame cords more precisely? Use a Rotary Cutter!

With a rotary cutter, you can cut your feathers and fringes fast and with ease. I love using the Fiskars Crafts Rotary Cutter and this eco-friendly self-healing cutting mat to get the job done!

#4 Crochet Hooks & Precision Tweezers

When you make Macrame jewelry and work with smaller cords, crochet hooks always come in handy when you need to pull your threads through small loops.

They’re also very useful when you have to close up your work, like the bottom of your Macrame bags for example.

When you need to unravel knots or make some changes to your work, it’s best to use some precision tweezers. This prevents the cords from getting damaged and it’s also a lot easier to undo any mistakes.

#5 BeadSmith Macrame Board

I really love these handy BeadSmith Macrame Boards to work on smaller projects like bookmarks or jewelry. The specially designed notches on all sides will hold your cord securely in place so you won’t need any pins.

Due to its lightweight material, you can take these boards with you wherever you go! The BeadSmith Macrame Boards come in two sizes: Mini Macrame Board: 6″ x 9″ inches (15 x 23 cm), perfect for micro-macrame, and a Large Macrame Board: 14″ x 10″ inches (36 x 25 cm).

#6 T-Pins

You can use any sort of pin to secure your project to a board, although I prefer T-pins because of the small handle on top for easy gripping.

#7 Corkboard

Corkboards are perfect for Macrame because you can use pins to secure your work, which is very useful when creating smaller projects such as Macrame jewelry or a Macrame purse.

Although any corkboard will do, it’s actually better to use one that is wrapped in plastic so you won’t find any cork residue in your Macrame projects.

This corkboard is specially designed for Macrame projects and includes T-pins plus some helpful guides on the front.

Vertical Macrame Workstation

Discover what you need to build the perfect vertical Macrame workstation for bigger projects such as wall hangings and planters.

#8 Macrame Work Stand

Most fiber artists use a simple adjustable clothing rack to hang their work. Combined with some large S-hooks and elastic bands to keep the hooks in place, you can easily adjust the height of your workspace for each stage of your project.

I like to have a clothing rack with multiple adjustable bars, so I can work on different projects at the same time. Extra bars can also be useful to store your cord spools and cutting ropes for your projects.

#9 Large S-hooks

You will need some Large S-hooks to secure your dowel to the clothing rack.

Tip: When the dowel or wood is still too thick for your S-hooks, you can also use a cord to attach your work to the clothing rack. This works even better for pieces of wood that aren’t straight, as you can adjust the cord by tying knots on different heights.

Storage

My best tip for storing all your Macrame supplies and accessories.

#10 Macrame Basket

My favorite thing to do when I need inspiration for my next project is going through my Macrame craft basket. It’s filled with gorgeous ropes, wooden rings, driftwood, gemstones, and everything I could ever need for a crafty Sunday.

Inside the basket, I also keep a jar filled with all my leftover cords from previous projects. I recommend always saving these because trust me, you’ll need them!
